Space to play and learn at Baytree School

John Perkins Construction has completed an extension at Weston-super-Mare's Baytree School, in a project that received praise from the very top of the North Somerset Council tree.

The £230,000 project to create two storerooms and build a cover for the soft play area has transformed the educational experience for the school's 67 special needs students.

Opening up the school

Previously, Baytree School had no choice but to store wheelchairs and their charging facilities in the classrooms and corridors. The extension to create new spaces to store this type of bulky equipment has completely opened up the school.

The students also get to enjoy their soft play equipment year round, even during wet weather, thanks to a new cover for the play area.

Collaboration with North Somerset Council

John Perkins Construction worked closely with North Somerset Council to carry out the fast-track project in just 11 weeks, finishing on time, despite an extremely short commencement period.

"John Perkins Construction proved to be proactive, diligent and trustworthy through the project," comments Mark Hands, Senior Quantity Surveyor at North Somerset Council. "It was a challenging site, due to the special school environment, which was occupied for part of the construction period. However, excellent site management and regular liaison with the school meant that any issues were resolved in a timely and effective manner."

Minimising disruption

Naturally, working in a busy school environment, filled with students with serious additional needs, threw up a number of obstacles. No phones were allowed on site, for example. Yet John Perkins Construction still prioritised strong communication throughout the project. Site Manager Sean Kelly talked to the school's head teacher, Fiona Richings, on a near-daily basis, to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum.

"The service we received from John Perkins Construction was outstanding," says Fiona Richings, head teacher of Baytree School. "The workforce was polite, helpful, and accommodating. Their communications were clear, and they always asked the 'right' questions, so they could understand how to suit our needs in the best way possible. The whole experience was pain-free, with no problems at all. As a result, we now have a fabulous quality extension."

Mark Hands of North Somerset Council adds: "We will definitely consider using John Perkins Construction for future North Somerset Council projects."
