Bigger is not always better

1st July 2025 | ,

Our experience over the last couple of years is that the likelihood of delays throughout the construction process (through tender, pre con, construction and completion of defects) increases, as is the likelihood of issues to be resolved around design, information and cost, on larger projects.

All of the above raises the risk of the expected tender margin becoming stretched over a longer period of time and or reduced resulting in an awful lot of effort for a minimal return.

The recognition of this trend led us to have a fresh focus on the balance of our workload resulting in a more even spread between bigger projects and smaller, more contained projects, which from experience we know usually have a more efficient journey from tender to end of defects.

We are particularly pleased therefore to have secured a series of lower value schemes, all of which commence within the next month or so and complete in a 12–16-week time frame. Any one project on its own would not move the dial significantly but as a group of projects they represent a very useful chunk of turnover and expected overhead contribution.

Secure Meters are a multinational company who create solutions for metering billing and collection, pump efficiency (ESCO), controlling heating and cooling, energy auditing, asset monitoring, older adult care, and more who have appointed us to fit out their new industrial unit based in Filton.

Jo Bird and Co ltd is a UK based company, internationally recognised leader in the design and manufacture of lifesaving and fire safety equipment storage. We have been tasked with the removal of an old cement sheet roofing and replacing it with new insulated roof panels and a PV array at their main premises in Highbridge.

2 Harbour Road, Portishead is an office building which requires the replacement of three projecting window units which have failed. A critical part of this work is for us to apply our experience to rethink and improve the current detailing.

Coleg Gwent has chosen us once more, from their framework of preferred contractors to which we have been re awarded a place, to complete complex enabling works on their Cross Keys Campus. We are proud to have been entrusted with this work in diverting major utility supplies and area remodelling in preparation for major works in the coming years.

City of Bristol College, following the successful delivery of the phase one works, has chosen to continue to trust us with their expansion of their Animal Care Facilities, awarding us with phase two of the works at their South Bristol Skill Academy. For us this is a really pleasing win, as it is proof of our people’s first approach to projects. It confirms to us that doing our utmost to create good and lasting working relationships with our clients does in fact lead to continued partnerships, and for that we are proud.
