Our Approach

What makes us different

At John Perkins Construction, we pride ourselves on being different from the construction industry stereotype. The directors’ ethos, which is driven down through the business, is the desire to work in collaboration, as part of a team.

This allows us to deliver for our clients the best project possible within the set parameters of the scheme. By working in an open and flexible way at all times, we’re able to make the whole process smoother and more satisfying for all parties.

Our proud status as an SME means that we give the personal touch to every project. However, despite our size, we’re able to punch above our weight, producing outstanding work while being a truly ‘considerate constructor’.

Find out more about what sets us apart from our competitors below:

Recognition from Awards Bodies

We are fortunate to have been recognised by a number of awards bodies over the last few years.

At the Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards, we’ve picked up Gold Awards for three years running, culminating in our winning the 2018 Most Considerate Site (£1m–5m category) accolade. This is the scheme’s top award and covers the whole of the UK. We received it for our community outreach and considerate behaviour during the extension of Hutton CE Primary School.

We are two-time Building Safety Group award winners (2017 and 2018), and finalists in the National Federation of Builders (NFB) Awards 2018 and LABC Building Excellence Awards 2018, among other accolades.

Excellent Site Teams and Resources

One of our greatest strengths lies in putting together the right teams for projects, drawing from our highly-experienced staff.

These teams are bolstered by expert guidance from our board, including David Parsons (Director of Pearce Construction and Building Safety Group), and from external advisors, including David Dursley (Regional Manager, Building Safety Group).

The ability to rely on a first-rate community of freelancers with specialist skill-sets also gives our business a further depth of knowledge and support for when additional needs arise.

Select Supply Chain

We also work closely with our supply chain partners, nurturing a small, select core of subcontractors from each trade.

Our door is always open to our supply chain. We run a twice-yearly seminar for our core subcontractors, to keep them up to date with the direction of both our business and the wider industry. We also involve them in our staff training and project meetings, treating our supply chain as part of our company.

The reward for this collaborative approach is that it creates excellent-quality workmanship and best value for money for the client.

Working on Complex and Sensitive Sites

Working on complex, sensitive and ‘live’ sites is a matter of course for us. We consider it one of our strengths.

Our extensive experience of keeping disruption to a minimum, while also upholding excellent Health and Safety during construction works is backed up by our excellent track record with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).

You will note from this graph of our recent CCS evaluations that we have consistently been able to achieve scores in the 40–45 point range (Excellent–Exceptional).

Community Engagement

A huge part of the reason we score so highly with the Considerate Constructors Scheme is that we seek to engage with the community on every project.

We do this by conducting site tours, holding workshops for students, and generally inviting local people to participate in the works.

We also seek to get involved with the Bristol, Bath and South West communities on a broader basis, particularly through supporting young people.

We’re passionate about helping the next generation into construction. We’ve had great success with employing apprentices, including Kai Douglas, who was named Outstanding Apprentice of the Year (Construction) at the 2017 Bristol and Bath Apprenticeship Awards. Kai has now finished his apprenticeship and has remained with the company as a full-time staff member.

Our directors also give up their time to attend careers fairs, give school presentations, and conduct mock interviews with local students. Contracts Director Rupert Perkins sits on the Advanced Construction Skills Centre (South Bristol) Steering Group, helping to boost interest in construction careers in the local area.

Client Satisfaction

In order to ensure we are delivering high levels of client satisfaction (and to find ways of further improving), we gather customer feedback for all our major projects.

The bar chart below demonstrates average customer scores from our most recent clients. An overwhelming number of clients said that they would recommend John Perkins Construction and would use the company again.

We hope that these statistics speak louder than any claims we could make about ourselves:
