John Perkins Construction was engaged to deliver a high-quality project to remove an underutilised area of roof terrace and provide in its place a new shell & core project to house a new executive lounge at Bristol Airport, forming part of the airport’s broader strategy to modernise facilities in response to growing passenger demand.
The majority of the scope of works had to be carried out under an ‘airside’ security environment and included structural alterations, a new steel frame with external cladding and internal boarding and specialist high performance window systems forming the shell. The creation of this new space required the reconfiguring an external decking area and extending the first floor to create a new enclosed internal space. A new mezzanine floor was also installed to provide additional workspace. New service connections were brought to the shell for final fitout by others.
Given the ‘live’ airport environment and ‘airside’ and ‘landside’ security protocols, the project required careful coordination with multiple airport stakeholders, including terminal management and operations teams and ‘airside’ operations.
From a design standpoint the project was a design and build with a nominated design team who, with our support, had to design a shell and core that not only met the specialist requirements of an airport terminal but also, in order to satisfy planning, achieve BREEAM (Very Good) and an air tightness value of 2.63 m3.h-1.m-2@50Pa at the completion of shell only. These goals were achieved and a successful handover made to the final fitout team.
JPC worked collaboratively throughout, ensuring clear communication and alignment of activities to minimise disruption to passengers, staff, and ongoing airport operations.
