John Perkins Construction was appointed to deliver the design and construction of the new £2.4M Brooklands Park Community Centre at Brooklands Park in Stoke Gifford, Bristol – a modern, multi-use facility designed to support community life as part of the wider Brooklands Park development. The project was built on behalf of Crest Nicholson, with planning secured through a Section 106 legal agreement as part of South Gloucestershire Council’s strategy to provide essential community infrastructure alongside new housing.
The building was constructed with a structural steel frame, traditional masonry external walls and an insulated single-ply roof with solar panels installed and battery storage, a latest generation air source heat pump and fitted with high-performance windows and doors to create a durable, excellent rated energy-efficient envelope. Internally, the centre was completed to a full fit-out standard to provide a welcoming lobby, café and servery, kitchen, office and meeting rooms, toilet facilities, storage, a dedicated plant room and a large community hall capable of hosting a wide range of activities and events. Mechanical and electrical systems were fully integrated throughout to support the comfortable, flexible use of the space along with a commissioned artwork installation capturing some of the history and wildlife of the very local surrounding the area including pieces of art that were made by local residents in a meet the artist workshop carried out during the construction period.
Externally, the project included the formation of car parking areas and pedestrian footpaths, installation of surface and foul water drainage systems, and connections to all main incoming services. The works were completed with comprehensive soft landscaping and seating, enhancing the centre’s setting within Brooklands Park and creating an inviting environment for visitors and users of the facility.
The completed facility represents a high-quality, purpose-built local community hub that we are proud to have delivered. Designed to be welcoming, flexible and durable, the centre has been developed in line with BREEAM criteria and we are currently on track to achieve a BREEAM “Very Good” rating. The result is an energy-efficient, sustainable space for local residents and community groups to enjoy, enhancing the use of Brooklands Park and leaving a lasting, positive legacy for the surrounding neighbourhood for many years to come.
