John Perkins Construction extended and refurbished Kingswood School’s Middle House boarding house, fusing the historical with the modern to create a stunning showcase piece for the school.
The £1.3 million project, the result of a competitive tender win, was completed over 41 weeks. With 26 bedrooms, plus bathrooms and ample social space, the boarding house is significant in size and was completed to a high-spec finish.
The design, by Mitchell Eley Gould, maintains the history of the existing 19th century house while also presenting a bold modern façade for the extension. Over the course of the build, the John Perkins team was able to offer input on ‘buildability’ and value-for-money options.
Kingswood School, located in Bath, caters to both day and boarding students, which means the school is effectively in use 24/7, including school holidays. Sensitivity and strong communication skills were therefore vital, in order to uphold health and safety and keep the site running smoothly. Site Manager Hayden Pickett and the site team were described by school staff as “approachable” and “always smiling”.
The good practices of John Perkins Construction were also rewarded with a 2017 Considerate Constructors Scheme Bronze National Site Award.
