Queen’s Building – Faculty of Engineering

Back

Working within a high-profile site in the heart of Clifton, John Perkins Construction carried out a £2million contract to refurbish and remodel the main entrance and adjoining areas of Queen’s Building for the University of Bristol.

The project was completed in two phases over 31 weeks. The first phase involved conversion of the existing lobby to a new, high-spec entrance, boasting a café and student facilities, and creating more joined-up and connected faculty office space. During the second phase, laboratories, toilets and other facilities on the mezzanine and basement levels were also refurbished.

Queen’s Building is home to the Faculty of Engineering, with its 2,500+ students and hundreds of staff. The building houses 27 specialised labs, including the UK’s largest earthquake engineering lab. Since the building works took place during both vacation and busy term-time periods, there was significant pressure on the John Perkins team.

However, the team was able to ensure Queen’s Building remained open at all times. This was achieved by working in a positive, collaborative with our design team partners and UoB Project Managers Provelio, whilst at the same time maintaining clear and open communication with all of the university’s various stakeholders.

The project was completed on time and considerably under budget, with handover achieved nearly defect-free. University of Bristol staff and students are now able to enjoy a light-and-airy ground floor that makes the building feel more contemporary, whilst retaining the history of the structure.
