Richmond Building – Film and TV Department

Back

In a £1.7m refurbishment project, John Perkins Construction transformed the empty shell of the 5th and 6th floors of the University of Bristol’s Richmond Building into a high-tech hub for the Film and TV Department.

Following a successful competitive tender, John Perkins worked in close partnership with the university to ensure that, financially, the project remained viable for both parties. The Design and Build contract was carried out over 26 weeks while the rest of Richmond Building remained in use.

John Perkins worked in collaboration with architect Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and M&E consultant AECOM in order to create a top-spec finish. Remodelling the Film and TV Department required installation of specialist lighting and heating/ventilation; sound systems for the lecture theatres; and different types of acoustic walls to achieve the varied audio effects.

Situated in the heart of the busy residential area of Clifton, keeping disruption to a minimum for Richmond Building’s neighbours was vital. And complex logistics were required to ensure the university’s staff and students remained unaffected by the works.

Access to the site was achieved via a goods and personnel lift – an external hoist attached to the side of the building that kept the upheaval of the construction work away from the people using the building.

The end result for the students of the Film and TV Department is a distinctive learning space that makes use of the latest technology.
