Staying Healthy in Construction: A UK Industry Priority

1st May 2025 |

As much as we love it, it’s hard to deny that we work in both a physically and increasingly mentally taxing industry. With over 2.1 million people employed in the sector, it’s crucial to prioritise not just safety on site, but health across the board. Long-term physical and mental well-being can significantly impact not only quality of life, but also productivity and retention within the industry.

What are the most Common Health Issues in UK Construction

  • Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)
Back pain, joint issues and repetitive strain injuries are common due to manual handling and repetitive tasks. The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) reports that MSDs account for over 40% of all work-related ill health in construction.
  • Respiratory Diseases
UK workers are regularly exposed to construction dust, including silica, wood dust, and asbestos. These can lead to serious conditions like silicosis, COPD, and lung cancer. Thousands of deaths a year are attributed to occupational lung disease in the UK. It is important to pay attention to any changes that you experience in your lung health and get in touch with your doctor as early as possible.
  • Skin Conditions
Regular contact with cement, solvents, and outdoor elements increases the risk of dermatitis and skin cancer (Construction workers represent approximately 8% of the UK workforce but account for 44% of occupational skin cancer diagnoses) especially without proper PPE and hygiene practices. There is an increasing drive to educate the industry on the risks of Melanoma to the UK construction industry. A good rule to keep in mind is “If it’s not safe for your hands, it’s not safe for your skin.” Protecting your skin is easy with the right gear, good hygiene, and early action, and it pays off with a healthier, longer career in construction.
  • Mental Health
Whilst there has been some focus on the previous three health concerns historically, we are only just beginning to realise the mountain there is to climb with mental health in our industry. Construction has one of the highest suicide rates among UK industries, with long hours, job insecurity and a culture of silence contributing to rising cases of stress, anxiety and depression. John Perkins Construction has been lucky enough to have had Band of Builders, UK based construction Charity, come and speak to us and our supply chain on more than one occasion. With their help we are building our awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding mental health. We wanted to share our knowledge of to look out for yourself and your colleagues as well as the resources available to help. The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone, what you are experiencing is common and most importantly, treatable.
  1. Break the Stigma: Start open conversations about mental health on site. The more it’s discussed, the more normal it becomes. Encourage team members to talk about how they’re feeling and listen without judgement.
  2. Know the Signs:
  • Be aware of symptoms in yourself and others, such as:
  • Mood swings, withdrawal, or irritability
  • Fatigue, poor sleep, or lack of motivation
  • Changes in appetite or behaviour
  • Increased use of alcohol or substances
  • Early support can make all the difference
  1. Take Care Physically: Mental health is closely linked to physical health. Eating well, staying active, and avoiding excessive drinking or drug use all have a big impact on mood and stress.
  2. Speak Up: If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. Speaking to a colleague, supervisor, friend, or helpline can be the first step toward getting help.
